LAUNCHING THE NEXT GENERATION OF
TRANSFORMATIVE PHYSICIAN SCIENTISTS
A background in human biology and scientific discovery positions physician-scientists to make unique contributions across scientific disciplines to advance human health. Thus, physician-scientists pursuing impactful basic research serve as an essential mechanism to connect discovery science to human health.
However, the pathway for those training in both clinical medicine and fundamental basic sciences poses unique challenges. The goal of the Scholars in Molecular Medicine Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine is to provide the most promising physician-scientist fellows specifically pursuing basic science training in the Departments of Medicine or the Department of Pathology a strong foundation to launch an innovative independent program, have sustained impact over their career, and ultimately become leaders in biomedical science.
“By investing in the next-generation of physician-scientists, giving them flexibility and time to grow, and incentivizing them to take bold directions, we are confident that the discoveries of Penn Medicine will reshape the face of
medical care for decades to come.”
