  • In select cases, the program will consider applicants who are applying for residency or clinical fellowship and demonstrate exceptional promise, prior to committing to a specific laboratory. These candidates should discuss their candidacy with program leaders prior to applying.

  • No! Your mentor can be any faculty member across the University.

  • No! We’re looking for any physician-scientist in training in the department who has exceptional promise. Some come to science later in their training, and we’re all about that.

  • No, we’re looking for candidates that are 1-2 years away from starting their independent program.

  • Yes, definitely apply as having a K08 or similar career development award does not make you illegible. However, we cannot support fellows with a K99/R00.

  • Yes, you must have some amount of clinical responsibility. The clinical responsibility during the award cannot exceed 20% per year (not in aggregate over the three years). Your division chief must commit to this requirement.

  • No, we are funding a person, not a project.

  • Please have them write a joint letter and provide the training record for both mentors.

  • No. The award is geared towards trainees pursuing basic biomedical or disease-oriented research.

  • The award is intended for support Scholars in their transition to independence. The award does not carry over if and when a Scholar is hired onto faculty and awarded a startup package.

  • No. While we hope the program helps Scholars accelerate their science and take bold directions, the hiring of faculty is a separate process.

  • Yes, we encourage all awardees to continue to apply for funding- both through the NIH and foundation-based.

  • The selection committee will be composed of a variety of scientists across many disciplines.

  • Moonlighting is strongly discouraged and more than 1 shift per month must be discussed in advance with program leadership.
