Alan Tang, MD, PhD
Dr. Alan Tang, MD, PhD, received his BS in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2012. He then completed his MD/PhD training at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program. During that time, he completed graduate thesis work in Dr. Mark Kahn’s laboratory studying cerebral cavernous malformations, an inherited cerebrovascular disease. His work defined endothelial cell mechanisms and unexpected pathologic interactions with the gut barrier and microbiome. In 2020, he began Internal Medicine Residency, and in 2022 short-tracked into Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship all at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. During this time, he studied lethal COVID-19 pathogenesis and the cell-autonomous role of the surface receptor ACE2 in SARS-COV-2 infection. He now returns to Dr. Mark Kahn’s laboratory focused on understanding orphan G-protein coupled receptors in the endocardium and how these receptors integrate extracellular molecular cues with mechanical forces to govern cardiac remodeling in development and disease.
